Lightning hitting a pine tree caused the recent forest fire in Muli County, Sichuan province, according to a report published Friday by the local forestry department.
The report is the result of an investigation that began April 2.
The 80-year-old pine tree in question stands on a ridge in the forest, bearing obvious signs of lightning strikes and burns.
The tree is the origin of the fire that killed 27 firefighters and three locals.
